My Decision to Become a Teacher

I wanted to become a teacher because I have many family members who are teachers. Also, I have had many teachers who have impacted me positively and negatively. These teachers have influenced me to also become a teacher. I enjoy working with kids and I have worked with kids in many different programs. I am an Elementary Education major with an endorsement in humanities and ESL. I would really love to teach in a different country. Although I am not sure where I want to go yet. I do not know yet which grade level I would like to teach either.

In this class I would like to learn how to use different types of technology so that I can use it in my classroom and every day life. There is a lot of technology now that I did not grow up using, and I am hoping that this class will teach me how to use it.

  1. Ashley, I think it is great that you want to teach in another country. There are actully a few programs through the school that give you this opportunity. Both Spain's and Japan's government have programs that you can apply for. Both offer assistant English teaching positions that pay very well. They also have health care and I think they compensate for travel expenses and so on. They are amazing programs that you could do the year after you graduate, and you have many resources here at the school to help you apply and get into them. If you are serious about teaching in another country you should talk to Suzan Koawaboshigawa about them.

  2. How great to be following in the footsteps of family members who value learning and teaching. I am sure that they will be a great support to you while you are here at NU and also provide the community that you need as you step into your first classroom. You will have a great impact on the students in your class whether here in America or in another country.

  3. Ashley-
That is awesome you want to teach outside of the US. There is such a big need for that. I know that you will do great wherever you end up. You're students will be blessed to have you as a teacher!
